V303: How To Create Flapper "Doll Eye" Makeup

Today's tutorial is inspired by several things - primarily Bette Davis and Clara Bow, and their ridiculously huge eyeballs, but also a blending of original flapper smokey eye makeup, and 21st century Japanese "Gyaru" style makeup - AKA, creepy doll eyes.

The idea with this look is *not* to be dead-on historical, but to give your eyes the illusion of being crazy huge with the magic of makeup.  I'm not a makeup expert by any means, but I found this look pretty easy to put together.  You can do it too! ... here's how...

1. Rim your eyes in black eyeliner, going along the lash line on the top lid, but UNDER the lash line on the bottom lid.  You are creating a little slice of space below your natural lash line.

2. With WHITE eyeliner, fill in the area beneath your lower lash line.  Also white-out your waterline (the skin between your lower eye lashes and your eyeball)  Then, with black powder, smudge out the black lines you drew, to give the smokey effect.

3. On the upper lid, blend the color of your choice - I chose copper - with more black eye shadow, carrying the darker color into the crease.  Here's how it looks so far...

4. Continue to darken and blend the eye shadow.  If you desire a stronger, darker line on your upper lash line, use a liquid eyeliner to draw the line and wing.

5. Now it's time for lashes.  You can use several sets of lashes on the upper AND lower lids (I've done just upper lids for this tutorial, but I used 2 types of false lashes).  Trim the inside corners of the false lashes to fit your eyes, then run a little glue along the edge, wait about 30 seconds to set, and place on your upper lash line.  Applying false eyelashes takes practice, but you'll get the hang of it (hey, if I can do it, you can too).

6. Here's how the false eyelashes effect the overall look.  The eye on the right has lashes, the eye on the left does not.  For an even bolder look, add false eyelashes to the bottom lid, along the black line.

7. Now both sets of lashes are on, and the look is done! If you want to darken the eyeliner or shadow more, go for it, until you have the smokey effect you want.

8. If you want to add the iconic cupid's bow lip to your look, first draw the shape on your lips with lip pencil.  You want to draw INSIDE your natural lip line.  To hide your natural lip line, apply concealer to the outer edges on top and bottom, and blend with your skin.

9.  Fill in your lips with a nice bold, matte red lipstick.  For the '20s look, you don't want anything with shimmer or glitter in it...just bold, flat red.

Here's the finished look!  Up close, you can easily see the white eyeliner drawn in under the eyes, but from a couple feet away, it just looks like you have FREAKING HUGE EYES.  This look can be toned down or exaggerated even more, and used for a 1920s-inspired look or even 1960s (Twiggy used similar tricks, even).  It's all about illusion!

I learned how to do this style of makeup from these helpful tutorials.  I hope you enjoy!

V300: Vintage Stockings, 20th Century

from Wearing History - 1939-40 - novelty stockings
The other night at the Bomber Girl's Pageant, I was asked if we carried vintage style seamed stockings in the A-D shop.  I had to tell the lovely girl no, but it got me thinking...maybe we should.

You'll all be excited to know that I've got several fine 20th century shoe styles planned for 2013, and we're even starting early, with the perfect 1920s t-strap spectators, "23Skidoo," which will be available on pre-order in about a week.

Wearing History - 1933
So why not some proper vintage stockings to go with them?  I know seamed stockings are available online in plenty of places, but there is a difference between what's available now, and what was *actually* worn in the 1920s and 30s.

For one, stockings were silk or rayon, not nylon, which came into being in the late 1930s.  They came in a variety of colors, but the seam up the back more typically matched the stocking color, rather than being black or red or some other risque choice.
Vintage Dancer - 1927
Cuban heels were around, as well as Manhattan heels, double-point heels, French heels.  These were to be found on "fully-fashioned stockings," which are stockings that have lisle-reinforce heels and toes, no lycra or stretch, and, of course, need to be held up with garters.

Via - I think these are all just 1920s novelty stockings that are claiming to be from different eras.  Those silly flappers!

These vintage styles are hard to come by, and apparently only a few manufacturers in the world make them.  I'm determined to find out more about these, though, and perhaps carry them in the store, so when you order your 23Skidoos, your Gibsons, your Claremonts or Rosemonts, you can add a pair of perfectly period and proper stockings. :-)

Tapestry

What do you think about traditional vintage floral prints and fabrics?  There's something into them that, I find very old school and traditional.  Happily, this FW we're going to see them more frequently :) Tapestry designs can be found in jeans, skirts, outerwear or dresses but I mostly like them on skirts.
What are your opinions on this trend? Yay or nay?

V299: Real WWII Bomber Girls

Today is the Battle Born Day's Bomber Girl Pageant.  I'm getting my '40s on right now, and will be dancing the night away, and hopefully impressing the pageant judges with my authenticity, at the USO swing dance tonight.
